Cast Iron Radiator Efficiency
While it is true that a cast iron radiator takes longer to heat up than a flat panel radiator, it also takes longer to cool down. Efficiencies of both types of radiator are approximately equivalent, but we would argue the cast iron radiator looks far better! Best efficiency savings are not to be made through the type of radiator, but rather through a highly efficient boiler. Also thermostatic radiator valves, and clever use of insulation. Furthermore by turning off radiators in rooms that are not used.
How big should my cast iron radiator be?
The size you need will depend on the room you intend to heat. In addition on how well insulated your space is and what you use the room for. For example your living room and bathroom should be warmer than your hallway and kitchen.
Heat output is measured in Watts or British Thermal Units (BTUs). To calculate the approximate heat requirement of your room, take the volume (width x length x height) in metres and multiply this figure as follows: Multiply by 50 for lounges and dining rooms, multiply by 40 for downstairs bedrooms, halls and kitchens. 40 for upstairs lounges and dining rooms. Multiply by 35 for upstairs bedrooms, and by 30 for upstairs kitchens. Multiply by 90 for downstairs bathrooms and by 75 for upstairs bathrooms.
Add 15% for north-facing rooms and add 20% for rooms with french windows. For rooms with double glazing deduct 10%. For properties in a very cold climate, such as windy high altitude locations, add 10%. This gives you an approximate guideline in Watts. To convert this into BTUs, simply multiply the number of Watts required by 3.41.
